I had a great dental visit. I had worked for a dentist office for 3 years and was very particular when I choose a new office for my family. I heard great things about Dr. Wright and Brittney had been our hygienist years before. Both my visits went very well. Dr. Wright is very personable. Her assistant Tina was very friendly and so was the whole office. They were very helpful when given me info on what I would owe. Dr. Wright fixed an issue for me that I had for years and didn’t think could be fixed. I highly recommend them.

Dental Offices Terrified me….Until I became one of Dr.Frank D’Auria’s first patients (long before “The Center for Dental Health” was established) and grieve his and his staff’s departure. They were a great crew. I’m feeling truly blessed by the seamless transition Dr. Kelly Wright has accomplished. I am not one who is comfortable with change or meeting new people, but everyone in this office is welcoming, friendly, helpful, competent, professional and just plain nice. What can I say other than Thank You.

Occusal Adjustment: Striving for Harmony in Your Bite and Beyond

Achieving Optimal Oral Function and Comfort through Precise Occlusal Alignment

A harmonious bite is not just about a beautiful smile; it’s the cornerstone of excellent oral health and overall well-being. When your teeth come together correctly, they function efficiently, and your jaw joints operate smoothly. Unfortunately, many individuals experience issues with their occlusion (bite), leading to discomfort, dental problems, and even systemic health concerns. At Union Street Dental, we believe in the power of occlusal adjustment to bring balance and harmony to your bite, ensuring you can enjoy a lifetime of optimal oral function and comfort.

Understanding Occlusal Adjustment

Occlusal adjustment, also known as bite adjustment, is a dental procedure that involves carefully reshaping the biting surfaces of your teeth to achieve proper alignment and balance. The goal is to optimize how your upper and lower teeth meet when you bite down (occlude). An occlusal adjustment is a precise process that requires the expertise of a skilled dentist.

Indications for Occlusal Adjustment

Occlusal adjustment may be recommended for individuals who experience one or more of the following dental issues:

  • Uneven Bite: When certain teeth come into contact before others when biting down, it can lead to an uneven bite, causing discomfort and wear on specific teeth.
  • Tooth Sensitivity: Misaligned teeth or an improper bite can lead to increased tooth sensitivity due to uneven pressure distribution.
  • Teeth Grinding (Bruxism): Bruxism, characterized by teeth grinding and clenching, can lead to excessive wear on tooth surfaces, requiring occlusal adjustments to restore proper alignment.
  • Jaw Pain and Tension: An imbalanced bite can cause strain on the jaw joints (TMJ), leading to jaw pain, headaches, and facial tension.
  • Chipped or Cracked Teeth: Teeth that do not come together correctly can experience excessive forces during chewing, making them prone to chipping or cracking.
  • Dental Restorations: After getting dental restorations like crowns, bridges, or implants, an occlusal adjustment may be necessary to ensure proper fit and bite alignment.

The Occlusal Adjustment Process

A thorough occlusal adjustment involves several steps to achieve precise results:

  • Comprehensive Examination: Your dentist will conduct a comprehensive examination, including X-rays and impressions, to assess the alignment of your bite and identify any areas of concern.
  • Recording Your Bite: Your dentist may use bite registration materials to record how your upper and lower teeth come together.
  • Identifying High Spots: Using articulating paper or a special marking material, your dentist will determine the areas where the teeth are coming into contact too soon or with excessive force.
  • Gentle Reshaping: Using precise dental instruments, your dentist will gently reshape the high spots on the biting surfaces of your teeth, ensuring a more balanced bite.
  • Testing and Refinement: After the initial adjustment, your bite will be reevaluated to ensure the proper occlusal alignment. Additional adjustments may be made if necessary.

The Benefits of Occlusal Adjustment

Undergoing occlusal adjustment offers numerous advantages, including:

  • Pain Relief: By achieving a balanced bite, occlusal adjustment can alleviate jaw pain, headaches, and facial tension associated with TMJ disorders and bruxism.
  • Preventing Tooth Damage: Properly aligned teeth distribute biting forces evenly, reducing the risk of chipped, cracked, or worn-down teeth.
  • Improved Oral Function: With a balanced bite, you can chew more efficiently and enjoy improved oral function.
  • Enhanced Comfort: A properly adjusted bite ensures optimal comfort, reducing sensitivity and discomfort during everyday activities.
  • Long-term Oral Health: A balanced bite can contribute to better oral health overall, preventing potential dental issues in the future.
